Sri Lanka finished with 315 for 6 at Stumps on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against Pakistan at the Galle International Stadium.

Dinesh Chandimal carried on with his dream run in the purest format as he scored 80 off 137 with 9 fours and 2 sixes before Mohammad Nawaz accounted for his wicket.

The hosts got off to a decent start courtesy of a 92-run partnership between Oshada Fernando and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne. Nawaz gave Pakistan their maiden breakthrough after getting rid of Fernando, who scored a quick-fire 70-ball 50 with 4 fours and 3 sixes.

After Fernando perished, Sri Lanka lost the quick wickets of Kusal Mendis and Karunaratne and were reduced to 120 for 3. While Karunaratne perished after scoring 40, Mendis failed to get into double digits.

However, Angelo Mathews and Chandimal restored sanity into proceedings with a 75-run stand for the fourth wicket. Mathews, playing his 100th Test, scored 42 runs before Nauman Ali, who replaced Shaheen Shah Afridi, accounted for his wicket.

Chandimal, on the other hand, scored his half-century off 99 balls and guided the hosts to a respectable score. Dhananjaya de Silva scored 33 after which Naseem Shah rattled his woodwork.

Niroshan Dickwella went on to score 42 runs off 43 and stayed unbeaten at the close of play on the first day. Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam, in the meantime, didn’t have the greatest of days in the outfield.

Babar first dropped a simple catch to give Mathews a lifeline in the second session. Thereafter, at the fag end of the day, he let go a simple chance in the slip cordon to give Dickwella a breather.

Nawaz was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan after he picked up 2 wickets. Naseem, Nauman and Yasir Shah picked up one wicket apiece.
