No, Sky didn’t kill Sky Q but has revealed a surprise new device that no one saw coming

Sky has just held a major launch event where many were expecting the firm to reveal a new set-top box that would rival its popular Q service. Despite plenty of rumours, there was no sign of this new internet-powered device with Sky launching a smart TV instead called Sky Glass. This telly features everything you need to tune into the firm’s channels and you won’t need a dish stuck to the wall or separate box popped under it as everything is built-in and powered by your broadband. You even get an in-built Dolby Atmos compatible soundbar which helps boost the audio.

It looks exciting and will go on sale later this month… but it wasn’t the only gadget Sky unveiled on stage with the company revealing another surprise new device that nobody saw coming. It’s called the Smart Camera and is aimed at making a night in front of the TV a little more interactive.

The little camera sits on top of your Telly and allows you to watch football with your friends, settle down for a movie night with family or play games, such as Fruit Ninja, via gesture controls.

It’s being developed alongside Microsoft and looks very similar to the gaming firm’s Kinect device which launched way back in 2013.

Speaking about the device at yesterday’s launch, Fraser Stirling, Sky’s chief product officer, said: “Working with Microsoft we’re also building a fantastic feature that lets us watch TV together even if we’re miles apart.

“It syncs your TV with other households, with integrated video and chat on-screen, and you can choose content from the biggest channels including Premier League matches, movies, and all your favourite entertainment.”

There’s no word on a UK launch or price just yet but Sky has revealed that it will be coming to homes at some point in 2022.

The final product that was revealed during Sky’s showcase is something called Sky Stream puck. These are available to anyone who buys Sky Glass and brings channels and extra features to any standard TVs you may already have in the house.

Each puck costs £10 per month to own and that’s on top of the price for Sky Glass which starts from £13 per month.
