AIIMS to accommodate more ICU patients now – ET HealthWorld

Bhopal: In a move to reduce waiting list of patients, AIIMS Bhopal is to decentralise dedicated intensive care units (ICU). The first such move was made on Monday with introduction of 10-bedded surgical ICU in the hospital. There are 138 ICU beds in the hospital catering to two dozen departments.

The ‘state-of-the-art’ ICU is equipped with all modern equipment and all high-risk elective and emergency surgical patients will immensely benefit from this ICU, said a press release. It was inaugurated under department of anaesthesiology by AIIMS Bhopal director, Dr Ajai Singh. Medical superintendent, Dr Manisha Shrivastava, professor and HoD Anaesthesiology, Dr Vaishali Waindeskar and other were present on the occasion.

Earlier on the lines of AIIMS New Delhi, each department had a dedicated ICU. It meant that even though the institute might have an ICU bed, but since particular department did not have bed in its wing, patient was put in waiting list. With a decentralized policy, a patient from another department can be placed in an ICU of another department. Details of the new protocol would be effective in the coming days, according to sources.

As per PMSSY mandate, AIIMS Bhopal is to have 18 specialty departments and 15 super specialty departments with a sanctioned non-faculty posts of 3776 and sanctioned faculty posts 305.

Currently, gastroenterology department sans a gastroenterologist and urology is yet to begin renal transplantation.
