Allahabad University to increase fee after several decades – Times of India

Prayagraj: After realising the unchanged tuition fee of Rs 12 since 1912, authorities of Allahabad University have decided to increase the annual fee for different undergraduate and postgraduate courses on the campus from the next academic session (2022-23).

The fee would be at par with other central universities of the country including Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Aligrah Muslim University (AMU) and will be applicable for the students from the next academic session only and the thus, the present student, enrolled in any course at AU would not had to pay the enhanced fee.

This follows the decision of the Academic Council (AC) of AU, which was held on the campus on Saturday.

According to AU’s public relation officer (PRO), Prof Jaya Kapoor, “The AC was of the opinion that since the fees of the university has not changed in the past many decades and the government is increasingly stressing upon the need for the universities to generate their funds, increasing the fee was inevitable”. Further, there is a reduction in the grants to the university and for effective management and running of the institution it is important to revise the current fee structure. The details of the enhanced fee would be announced later, she added.

“The fee structure of all the regular UG, PG and PhD courses is also revised commensurate with the fees of other major central universities and recommendation of the Finance Committee (FC)”, said the PRO. It will be applicable for students taking admission from the session 2022-23 and will not be applicable for the present students, she added.

Besides, hiking the fee is also necessary because the hostels are in shambles and need to be renovated along with removing illegal inmates. The university has 20 hostels including the recently acquired Hindu hostel. The fees need to be hiked for the fresh inducted students to ensure a smoother functioning of the hostels to provide optimum facilities to the students.

The AC also approved introducing 10 new integrated 5-year courses from the coming academic session. These include BA/BSc and MA/MSc in yoga and Meditation, BTech and MTech in CSE with major in Artificial Intelligence (AI), BA/BSc and MA/MSc in disaster management and environmental studies etc.

The AC also felt that there are a lot of cases wherein university’s reputation was maligned following posting derogatory marks against the institution on the social media and the media. “If any student is found continuously posting these remarks, disciplinary action will be taken against the student concerned. If a faculty member is found making such remarks, stringent action will be taken through the approval of the Executive Council, this was the decision of the AC”, said the PRO.
