Amazon Academy: E-tailer giant to shut down online learning service in August 2023 – Times of India
Amazon, like several other tech companies across the world, are taking steps to be prepared for the upcoming economic downturn. As a part of this preparation, the e-tailer major has already started cutting jobs across multiple divisions and has also asked several Indian employees to resign voluntarily Now, the company has reportedly decided to shut down its Ed-tech service, Amazon Academy, in India. Amazon Academy will stop working in the country from August 2023. The report also mentions that the company will refund the full fee to the students who are enrolled in the current academic batch.
What is Amazon Academy
Amazon Academy, which was previously known as JEE Ready was officially launched by the company in January 2021. This service was aimed at students who were preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) which is needed to enter engineering colleges in the country.
The online education service uses curated learning material, live lectures and comprehensive assessments in Math, Physics and Chemistry to offer practice routines required for the JEE. Amazon Academy allows students to engage with expert faculty, learn concepts, and clarify doubts in real time.
Why Amazon is shutting down this service
According to a report by IANS, a company spokesperson has explained that Amazon regularly evaluates the progress and potential of its products and services to deliver customer value. The company also makes adjustments based on those assessments, the spokesperson added.
The company has decided to discontinue the Amazon Academy service after such an assessment. The spokesperson also mentioned that Amazon will wind up this programme in a phased manner to take care of its existing customers.
Apart from Amazon, several other edtech firms are winding down their business as they come under pressure from schools and coaching centres that are reopening across the country after Covid-19-induced lockdowns.
Industry leader Byju’s announced 2,500 job cuts last month to become profitable. Other players like Toppr, WhiteHat Jr, Unacademy, and Vedantu have also reportedly announced several job cuts.
