amazon: Explained: What you need to know about ‘refurbished’ products on Amazon – Times of India

It is raining deals, discounts and offers on e-commerce platforms in India. Amazon is running its Great Indian Festival sale just ahead of the festive season. While new products are always the preference for most people, sometimes looking at refurbished products can also help you snag a rather good deal on a smartphone, headphones and other products. Amazon has explained what really refurbished products are and we break it down to give you more clarity on it.

What are refurbished products?

Amazon says that “refurbishment is the distribution of products (generally electronics) that have been returned to a manufacturer or vendor for several reasons.”

Are refurbished products used or second-hand products?

No, they are not. Amazon categorically states that “refurbished products are not second-hand or used products.” The e-commerce giant says that these products are professionally inspected, tested, and cleaned to work like new products by the seller.”

Refurbished products are not new products either

Simply because you will be able to see a few visible signs of earlier use. They are tested and certified by professionals for functionality and defects.

Do you get these products in a new and original packing?

Not always. Amazon has a refurbishment process that includes a diagnostic test and replacement of any defective parts. “After a thorough cleaning and inspection process, these goods will be packaged in either original packaging or a new and clean cardboard box,” says Amazon.

Do you get accessories and a warranty?

Yes, you do get all the relevant accessories. For example, if you buy a refurbished smartphone then you will get a charger with it. Unless it’s an iPhone or Samsung phone where the company doesn’t ship the charger only. Also, buyers get a minimum 6-month seller-backed warranty, claims Amazon.

The ‘go green’ reason for refurbished products

Amazon claims that purchasing refurbished products can significantly reduce the impact on the environment. “These products are better for the planet so when you purchase a refurbished product, you help in extending the lifetime of this product and reduces electronic waste,” says the company in a blog post.
