An old repair shop is transformed into an eclectic home

Take inspiration from some of Australia’s best living spaces, featured in Sunday Life. A pair of architects have cleverly transformed an inner-Sydney repair shop into a stylish but still compact family home.

The living room may be small, but Ruth is more than happy with it. “The reality is that that’s all you need,” she says. The large pink artwork is by Brett McMahon.Credit:Jennifer Soo

The home
A modern, three-level, 2½-bedroom apartment in Sydney’s inner west. Prior to becoming residences, the building was a car repair shop.

Who lives here
Ruth Leiminer and Kieran McInerney, both architects, their children Finn, 14, and Tillo, 11, and
dog Gary.

Space was saved in the kitchen by not having a dishwasher or range hood and by using double drawers. An induction cooktop also doubles as bench space. Credit:Jennifer Soo

What we did
The original space was a 48-square-metre studio with a double-height ceiling and a mezzanine that could only accommodate a desk. Ruth and Kieran gutted the studio and added a middle level with two generous bedrooms and a bathroom. The third floor has an attic bedroom.

The main bedroom has dual ceiling heights, creating a sense of space. Ruth offsets the white tones with colourful scarves. The artwork is by Jas Hugonnet.Credit:Jennifer Soo

Our favourite room
Ruth adores the main bedroom, with sliding doors opening onto a balcony overlooking the courtyard. “I just love the view from the bed into the trees,” she says. “I feel so close to the sky.” Kieran opts for the living room: “It’s where we all are together. It’s snug and it’s always changing.”

The ’hood
“Newtown is cultural, with theatres and galleries nearby, and close to great parks for exercise and walking Gary,” says Kieran.

Finn’s bedroom is on the top floor and has a pitched roof with windows on three walls. “It’s a bit like being on the bridge of a ship,” says Ruth.Credit:Jennifer Soo
