android: Google brings a useful update for Android smartwatch users – Times of India

Smartwatches running on Google’s operating system will be updated to Wear OS 3 that will be based on Android 11 by the second half of 2022. However, before that Google has introduced a redesigned “System updates” screen for the Wear OS. According to a report by 9to5Google, most Wear OS updates have been through apps from the Play Store or through Google Play services to date. The Wear OS version 21.42.18 comes with the latest “System updates” UI, which can be accessed by visiting the Settings app. Then click on System and then select About.
It initiates with a little smartwatch icon and a reminding status that says — “Your watch is up to date”. Google has kept this message the same but has removed the blue checkmark. This status is now followed by “Android version” then it will show “Android security update.”
Google decided to obscure the original Android release with a “System version” scheme by using a letter (e.g. H) in 2018. The security patch level was available at the bottom of the “Versions” list even then. Google could never move on from ‘Hematite’ — which is basically a type of iron oxide in mineral form.
The actual Android release number reappearing is somewhat intriguing and this change comes as multiple wearables prepare for the Wear OS 3 update which is based on Android 11. It looks like Google is trying to lay the groundwork with this update which might be widely available within the upcoming days.
There is no doubt that users are more used to “Ändroid” with a number that is already one version behind smartphones.
