Apple, Samsung cancel plans to make OLED iPad – Times of India

Apple has reportedly called off a joint project with Samsung. As per a report on The Elec, both companies have canceled the plan to develop a 10.86-inch OLED iPad. The tablet would have been Apple’s first tablet to sport an OLED panel and it was slated to launch in 2022. As of now only Apple Watches and iPhones have OLED technology as it is expensive.
Most of the OLED panels use a single slack structure where red, green and blue form one emission layer. According to the report, Apple demanded two stack tandem structures for the iPad OLED panel as it stacks two red, green and blue emission layers which doubles the brightness and extends the life of the panel by up to four times.
On the other hand, Samsung reportedly proposed a single stack structure. The Report suggests that profitability is an issue for Samsung and unless it can be certain that the upcoming OLED iPad will be sold for a long time, preparing for the back-end module process won’t be worth the cost. Currently only LG applies two stack tandem structure to its OLED panels but the company has a relatively small production capacity.
The report further reveals that Apple is planning to have low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology on the 10.86-inch iPad and low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) on the other to iPad models slated to launch in 2023 or 2024. This means that the Korean manufacturer would have had to change its production lines from LTPS to LTPO. The move required complete resetting of the manufacturing line which is expensive. Samsung was already facing difficulty in increasing the yield rate for 10.86-inch OLED panels.
Most of the rumours on the internet suggest that Apple will reveal an OLED iPad Air next year and today’s report doubles down on the proposed launch.
