Woakes’ entry into the series was marked by an impressive display of skill. He picked up six crucial wickets during the Headingley Test match, demonstrating his prowess as a bowler. However, it wasn’t just his bowling that caught everyone’s attention. Woakes also showcased his batting skills, scoring a vital 32 runs in the second innings which eventually helped England win the Headingley Test. His performance played a pivotal role in guiding England to a much-needed victory, cutting Australia’s Ashes lead to 2-1.

Karthik hailed Woakes’s impact in the series.

“Woakes, for me, is such an interesting cricketer because he doesn’t get picked much but when he does, he makes such a massive difference. His seam position in this Test has been the best of all the bowlers that have bowled. I think he has been fabulous,” the India keeper said.

Indeed, Woakes’s performance in the third Test was nothing short of fabulous. His consistent delivery with the ball, coupled with his ability to score under pressure, changed the momentum of the match. His partnership of 59 runs with Harry Brook was instrumental in turning the tide in England’s favour. In the ongoing Test match at Manchester, Woakes picked 5 wickets in the first innings, dismissing David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, Alex Carey and Josh Hazlewood. The pacer was not able to contribute with the bat in the first innings but was once again impressive with the ball on Day 3 of the game. Woakes bowled 9 overs, took 4 maidens and picked 1 wicket by giving away just 18 runs before the end of day’s play.

The Ashes 2023 has seen Woakes rise to the occasion, proving that he is not just a player who fills in gaps but a game-changer who can turn the tide in his team’s favor. As the series progresses, England will be hoping for more such performances from Woakes.
