Ashes 2023: England have had an incredible transformation in last 12 months, says Michael Atherton

By India Today Sports Desk: England have played their most competitive Test cricket in the last 12 months, feels former batter, Michael Atherton. Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the play’s resumption on Day 5 of the Manchester Test match, Atherton said that the results cannot take away the fact that this is the best that England have been in long long time.

England came into the Ashes 2023 in the backdrop of a terrible series loss against Australia in 2021/22 where they were blanked 0-4 under the captaincy of Joe Root.

Ashes, 4th Test: Final Day Live

England’s performance in the series has been highlighted by their ultra-aggressive cricket. After losing two close matches at Edgbaston and Lord’s England dominated Australia in the third Test match at Leeds.

The series has seen its share of drama and controversy. During the second Test, there were unsavoury scenes in the Lord’s Long Room, with three MCC members suspended for their part in an incident with various Australia players. Despite these challenges, England’s players have shown resilience. For instance, Ben Stokes upped his counter-attacking style of batting and made incredible contributions in both Lord’s and Leeds Test matches.

“England have taken the game to Australia in a way an England team haven’t done for a very, very long time,” Atherton said on Sky Sports.

“They have dominated this game. When was the last time you saw an England side dominating Australia as they have done here?” he further added.

England came into the fourth Test match 1-2 down in series but dominated the Australian side in Manchester in the first four days of the Test match.

“Yes they have made some errors, yes they are 2-1 behind, and if the rain doesn’t play ball they may not win the Ashes. But don’t lose sight of the incredible transformation of this side over 12 months,” Atherton concluded.
