Ashes, 4th Test: Australia will be disappointed after letting good opportunity slip, says Ricky Ponting

By India Today Sports Desk: Australian legend Ricky Ponting expressed his disappointment with Australia’s batting performance following the first day of the fourth Ashes 2023 Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. Despite favourable conditions for batting, the Australian team failed to capitalise on the opportunity, with their top score standing at a mere 51.

Ponting, who has been closely following the Ashes series, has been particularly vocal about the selection of David Warner, who has been struggling with form throughout the series. Despite Warner’s poor performance, Ponting had previously backed him for the fourth Test, citing his past achievements and potential to bounce back.

However, the first day of the fourth Test did not see a significant improvement in Warner’s performance. The Australian opener managed to score only 32 runs before being dismissed off Chris Woakes. This was followed by a string of disappointing performances from other key players, including Usman Khawaja (3).

The Australian team ended the day with a total of 299/8. This lacklustre performance led Ponting to express his dissatisfaction. “I think Australia will be disappointed,” he said on Sky Cricket. “They have let a very good opportunity slip. It has been pretty good batting conditions [with the sun out] and their top score is 51.”

Ponting’s comments reflect the high standards he set during his own career. Known for his aggressive batting and sharp captaincy, Ponting led Australia to numerous victories, including two World Cup wins. His critique of the current team’s performance underscores the challenges they face in living up to the legacy of their predecessors.

Despite the disappointing start, Ponting remains hopeful for the rest of the Test. He believes that the Australian team has the potential to turn things around, given their track record and the talent within their ranks. However, he also stressed the need for the players to step up and deliver under pressure.

The fourth Ashes Test is crucial for both teams. England are looking to level the series after losing the first two Tests, while Australia are aiming to secure the Ashes with a win. With the stakes so high, the performance of the Australian batters in the coming days will be under intense scrutiny.
