Bayern Munich clinch 10th successive Bundesliga title after beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in Der Klassiker

Bayern Munich won their 10th successive Bundesliga title after beating Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena on Saturday. They were already nine points clear of the Yellow Wall coming into this game and successfully retained the title in front of their home fans with three games to spare in the German top-flight.

This was Bayern’s 106th meeting with Dortmund having all the bragging rights with 51 wins, winning their 31st domestic title. Borussia Dortmund have only won 9 games in Munich.

Bayern Munich dominated right from the off, pressing Borussia Dortmund high up the pitch, running in behind Dortmund’s open defence. The minute Dortmund lost the ball, Bayern Munich looked threatening, putting pressure on the visitors.

The first two goals in the first half occurred due to Marco Rose’s men giving the ball away in key areas, with Bayern being very effective in the final third. The Yellow Wall have been struggling defensively this season, as they’re 11th for goals conceded (45) in 31 games so far this season.

Bayern Munich took a corner and the ball landed on Serge Gnabry’s feet, who controlled it and smashed the volley into the top corner from the edge of the box in the 15th minute. The German international doubled the hosts’ lead at the half hour mark but it was ruled out as Bayern winger Kinglsey Coman was offside in the build up.

Robert Lewandowski, who is now 2 goals shy of 50 goals in all competitions this season scored Bayern Munich’s second goal, and his 33rd league goal of the season. Gnabry won the ball from Dan-Axel Zagadou, giving it to Thomas Muller who assisted the Polish international to smash it into the back of the net, making it 2-0 for the hosts in the 34th minute.

Borussia Dortmund were awarded a penalty when Marco Rues was brought down in the box by Joshua Kimmich. Emre Can scored the penalty, sending Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer the wrong way, to make it 2-1 for the visitors. The game came to light as Dortmund started to attack, Erling Haaland found Reus in the box, whose shot was saved by Neuer.

Lucas Hernandez made a goal saving tackle when Haaland found Reus yet again in the box, to keep it 2-1. Dortmund were denied a penalty at the hour mark when Jude Bellingham was brought down by Benjamin Pavard. The French defender got the England midfielder first, and then the ball, but it wasn’t given even after the VAR check was complete.

Erling Haaland came close to equalising for Dortmund in the 80th minute, but his shot hit the post instead. Jamal Musiala closed the game with Bayern’s third goal in the 83rd minute. His initial shot was saved by Hitz, but he put the ball away from six yards out into the corner on the rebound.

Borussia Dortmund have not won this fixture in three years, and they haven’t beaten Bayern Munich at the Allianz since the last five years Dortmund have conceded at least three goals against Bayern in each of their last five meetings in all tournaments.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men only had the Bundesliga to play for as they were surprisingly knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Villarreal in the quarter-finals after they drew 1-1 at home (2-1 on aggregate) with Unai Emery’s men. But they yet again managed to show their domestic dominance for the tenth consecutive time.
