Bellus Academy Celebrates the Beauty of National Entrepreneurship Month

As National Entrepreneurship Month is observed in November, Bellus Academy is celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit and successful career paths of beauty professionals.
A presidential proclamation announcing the observance notes that a record 5.4 million new businesses were started in 2021 – 20% more than any year on record. As the pandemic has prompted people to contemplate their careers, the professional beauty industry offers three rewards that have always appealed to entrepreneurs: purpose, passion and earning potential. Alumni’s entrepreneurial paths speak to the success. Below, we look at career snapshots of three Bellus Academy graduates:
Savannah Thorpe blends family and business, as the founder of the Lash Spa Boutique with locations in Kansas and South Dakota. When the pandemic led to salon closings, Savannah pivoted to “designer mode” and developed a line of magnetic lashes. Her first 1,000 units sold out over the weekend.
Jessica Andrews built on success as a makeup artist working at New York Fashion Week to develop her own makeup line sold online and through retail. Believing that beauty should be accessible to everyone, Jessica’s line will be available in November 2022 at select Hy-Vee locations.
Elnaz Arman lives the American dream every day as an immigrant from Iran who boldly stepped out of a career in petrochemical engineering to discover her passion for art as a hairstylist. Since leaving a high-profile corporate career, her artistry has been honored with some of beauty’s most inspiring awards – including the Wella BEA “Future Star” award.
As these alumni reflects, the beauty industry is inclusive. According to the White House proclamation, new entrepreneurship rates have increased the most among minorities particularly in Hispanic and Black communities.
Bellus Academy owner Lynelle Lynch – also an entrepreneur – says that beauty education has evolved to prepare students for entrepreneurial careers. “While we teach the art and science of beautiful, it’s also important that Bellus Academy equips students with the skills and knowledge to start, nurture and scale a business as it grows,” she says. “And while we can talk about the importance of an educational curriculum, the ultimate “proof” is the success of our students.”
