Traditionally, all external storage drives were hard disk drivers (hence most point would still call this a hard drive), but as solid-state flash storage has become cheaper and more readily available, portable SSDs provide similar capacities to HDDs but at much faster speeds.
Whilst traditional hard drives are great for backing up or moving old, archived files onto them for storage, SSDs are fast enough to work off files (for example, video files) without having to transfer them to your main internal drive.
