Business daily – French competition watchdog fines Google €500 million over news rights row
France’s competition watchdog has fined Google €500 million over a row with media companies about paying them for their content. The authority said the US technology giant had failed to comply with its 2020 order to negotiate with publishers over a payment deal for their “neighbouring rights” under EU copyright law. Google described the decision as “very disappointing”. It now has two months to agree a deal with media groups, or face further penalties.
