‘Cancer hosps need more technicians’ – ET HealthWorld
Lucknow: The number of cancer patients getting treated with radiation therapy can be doubled by increasing the number of technicians in government medical institutions, said experts, who are also the alumni of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) at a continuing medical education programme organised by Medanta Hospital on Sunday.
Prof Shaleen Kumar, a faculty at the radiotherapy department of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPIMS), said, “About seven to eight cancer patients each get radiation therapy in three government medical institutions, KGMU, SGPGIMS and Cancer Institute. This number can be doubled by deploying more technicians.”
As of now, technicians work an 8-hour shift and many patients could not be entertained for a limited period. To resolve the issue, the government needs to deploy more technicians, Prof Kumar added.
Dr Deepak Gupta of Medanta hospital said that high-dose radiation therapy through a robotic cyber knife, which is a new technology,is effective in brain, lung, jaw and prostate cancer.
