Conduct district level PU final exams; DK PU Principals to govt – Times of India

MANGALURU: Dakshina Kannada Pre-University Colleges Principals Association (DKPUCPA) including various subjects lecturers associations has written to the primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar requesting the government to modify the existing system of conducting PU final examinations in the wake of the pandemic.

Umesh M Karkera, president of, DKPUCPA has stated that the state government should treat this academic year as a special case and exams should be conducted only at the district level. For this, a committee of experts led by the deputy director, department of PUE must be formed. Many students from outside the district have already returned home and hence this year too the government must make provisions for students to answer the exams at centres in their hometowns. Further, the association requested the government to consider the evaluation of the answer scripts at the taluk level and PUC marks should not be considered for KCET exams.

As the second wave of the pandemic rages, and the nation is already discussing the third wave, in the wake of a health emergency, it seems unscientific to conduct exams in the same manner like they used to be held under normal circumstances. Indian students from nursery to class 12 were introduced to the online system of education only after Covid-19. Most of the rural students and economically backward students in urban areas are deprived of online classes due to technical, economic, and social reasons. Offline classes were held only for about 3.5 months this year. Most of the lecturers have noticed that even talented students who excelled in the first PUCexam of the previous academic year have performed poorly in the class exams held this year. Last year the English exams were held after the lockdown and the results were not impressive.

Congratulations!

The principals feel that in the current situation it is difficult for lecturers to travel to other cities for evaluation. They have suggested preparing a question bank or five model question papers and the final year examination paper should be based on this. The entire process should be student-centric. Necessary steps should be taken at the earliest, the association urged the government.
