CWG 2022: England’s Alex Yee grateful after winning gold in men’s triathlon – I just wanted to stay as calm as possible

England’s Alex Yee was over the moon after winning gold in the men’s triathlon at the Commonwealth Games 2022. On Friday, July 29, the 24-year-old became the first to win gold in the mega event at Birmingham after he clinched victory in 50 minutes and 34 seconds.

The Young Turk chased down New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde, who finished the race in 50 minutes and 21 seconds. Australia’s Matthew Hauser finished in third position. After coming up trumps, Yee said that he was happy after being able to perform well in front of his parents.

“It’s the first time I’ve been able to race in front of my parents for a long time at a major Games. I’m just happy. It’s bizarre it’s me that’s doing this and I can feel extremely grateful to be in this situation,” Yee was quoted as saying.

“I feel proud to be a triathlete today, to see so many different nations who I’ve never raced before and who are doing a triathlon for the first time. It’s just wicked. Really proud of the guys in my team, they helped me,” he stated.

Yee, who is taking part in his maiden CWG, was highly benefitted in the 5km race for the fact that Wilde was hit with a 10-second penalty. Yee also said that he didn’t push the panic button at any stage of his run.

“This is my first Commonwealth Games, just soaking it up. Thousands of people are out on the course and I just wanted to enjoy it. I just wanted to stay as calm as possible and run my own race. I wanted to make sure there was plenty in my legs when I got there,” Yee added.
