Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hosted the Commonwealth Games-returned Indian athletes at his residence and hailed them for their memorable performance at the CWG 2022.

CWG 2022 got underway on July 28 with a spectacular opening ceremony. PV Sindhu and Manpreet Singh were named as the two Indian flagbearers for the event. Weightlifter Sanket Sargar won India’s first medal winner of the edition by clinching a silver in the men’s 55kg event. On the other hand, Mirabai Chanu was the first from his country to clinch gold.

The Indian women’s cricket team won a silver medal after the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side fell short in the gold medal match against Australia. The women’s hockey team won bronze after defeating New Zealand while the men’s hockey team won silver.

India wrapped up its Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign at fourth position with 61 medals (22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze). Wrestling topped the medal chart with 12 medals, including six gold while weightlifting accounted for 10 medals. India has delivered its fifth-best performance of all time in their Commonwealth Games history, with their best being a total of 101 medals when the games were held at home in 2010.

“Vinesh put behind the disappointment, PV Sindhu forced opponents to leave the court and run. The way our cricketers played under Harmanpreet Kaur was commendable. Your achievements will inspire the generation of girls to come,” PM Modi said during his interaction with the athletes.

“We had our most successful outing at World Athletics Championships, a good show at U-20 World Athletics. We also had wonderful performances in World Cadet Wrestling and international para-badminton tournaments. These are exciting times for Indian sports,” PM Modi added.
