Data Protection, Telecom Bills may be tabled in Monsoon Session: IT Minister – Times of India

Digital Data Protection Bill and Telecom Bill are likely to be tabled in Parliament during the next Monsoon Session, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Communications and Electronics, and Information Technology said noting that the bills are in a “very advanced stage”.
The government is also working on the Digital India Bill. The minister said that while the Digital Data Protection Bill and Telecom Bill have already been placed for public consultation, the third bill will be published soon.
“Prime Minister [Narendra Modi] has given a very clear vision that there should be a legal framework for the Digital Empowered Society. In this exercise very advanced work is going on Telecom Bill, Digital Data Protection Bill and Digital India Bill,” Vaishnaw was quoted by news agency ANI.
“We have taken special care in all three bills that it should be easy to understand, should be technology agnostic, and should be future ready,” the minister added while speaking at the recently-concluded Google for India event.
Vaishnaw also noted that people in Tier 2, and Tier 3 cities, small towns, and villages are adopting technology very fast. The three Bills focus on how to secure the digital space in India, he said.

Google CEO says regulatory frameworks needed for innovation
Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who was in India at the company’s flagship Google For India event, pointed out that not only do regulatory frameworks provide a secure digital space to a country’s citizens and safeguard their data, they also help companies innovate by staying within the boundaries of the law.
“India has a leadership role to play here. It’s important to make sure you’re balancing the safeguards you’re putting for people and creating innovative frameworks so that companies can innovate on top of certainty in the legal framework,” Pichai said.
“I think it’s important for countries to think about how to best safeguard their citizens. We are engaging constructively. It is easy to build something which scales across the entire country and this is the opportunity that India has. There’s no better time to do a startup, even though we are working through a macro-economic situation right now,” the Google CEO added.
