Duleep Trophy: Washington Sundar aims to revive red-ball career after Duleep Trophy return | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India all-rounder Washington Sundar has set his sights on rejuvenating his red-ball career after making a quiet return to First-Class cricket in the Duleep Trophy. Following a six-month gap, Washington had the opportunity to showcase his skills in the red-ball format during South Zone’s Duleep Trophy semi-final against North Zone last week.
While the numbers may appear underwhelming on paper, with just one wicket and 14 runs in 11 overs, Washington found a glimmer of hope in his performance, viewing it as a catalyst for his future journey.
“The Duleep Trophy is very important because performing here will instil confidence and belief in our skills. The more red-ball games I play, the more experience I will gain and the more I will learn. I hope to get the chance to play County cricket, which will aid in my growth,” expressed Washington on Tuesday ahead of the Duleep Trophy final against West Zone.

At the age of 23, Washington has faced his fair share of injuries over the past couple of years, with the most recent setback being a hamstring niggle during the IPL 2023, forcing him out of the tournament. Making his competitive cricket comeback through the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) while representing the Madurai Panthers, Washington is grateful for the early-season Duleep Trophy matches that allow him to regain form without undergoing rehabilitation.
“Having games like the Duleep Trophy early in the season is beneficial as I want to play as many matches as possible. It’s good that I don’t have to go through any rehab right now,” Washington commented with a wry smile after completing his training.
Undoubtedly, the frequent interruptions to his game time could have been frustrating for the aspiring cricketer. However, Washington believes that these challenges have made him mentally stronger.

“Obviously, it’s mentally challenging. I do everything possible to strengthen my muscles and ensure quick recovery from injuries. Challenges are a part of everyone’s daily life, and it’s the same for a cricketer. I just need to find a way to overcome them and remain focused on the present. I make sure my work ethics and routine remain unaffected,” shared the off-spinner.
Washington recently returned to donning the Indian jersey after a year-long hiatus during the white-ball series against New Zealand in 2023. The all-rounder is hopeful that more opportunities lie ahead and is determined to improve and perform whenever he gets the chance.
“I need to get better and perform wherever I have the opportunity. That’s the only thing I should be thinking about. Every single day, when I wake up, I ensure that I maintain my routine and work ethics to stay at the top of my game,” concluded Washington Sundar.
