Fairfield beats ASU 9-7, reaches 1st NCAA regional final
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Justin Guerrera capped the scoring with a three-run homer in the sixth and No. 3 seed Fairfield advanced to an NCAA regional final for the first time in program history with a 9-7 win over second-seeded Arizona State 9-7 in the Austin Regional on Sunday.
Fairfield, which had lost to the Sun Devils in its opener on Friday, will face No. 2 overall seed and regional host Texas, which can clinch the region Sunday night. The Stags will need to beat the Longhorns Sunday and Monday to advance to the Super Regionals.
The Stags (39-4) rallied from a 5-0 third-inning deficit, scoring two runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings before Guerrera gave them the lead in the sixth.
Michael Sansone (9-2) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief and John Signore faced one batter to record his second save of the season, striking out Hunter Jump with the tying run on second.
Nate Baez homered and Jump went 4-for-6 for the Sun Devils (33-22). Brady Corrigan (2-2) got the loss.
