- India lost to Qatar in their Group E fixture of FIFA WC and Asian Cup qualifiers
India and Chennaiyin FC star Anirudh Thapa has tested positive for Covid-19. The young midfielder is in quarantine in a separate hotel room at their team hotel in Doha where India are playing their FIFA World Cup 2022 and Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers.
Anirudh Thapa tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, according to the Press Trust of India. He did not take part in India’s match against Asian champions Qatar on Thursday.
“Yes, Anirudh Thapa tested positive [for COVID-19] and he is isolated (from other team members),” All India Football Federation general secretary Kushal Das told PTI on Saturday.
Anirudh Thapa will be tested again for Covid-19 in a few days. The Chennaiyin FC midfielder has played over 20 matches and is an integral member of the senior national team.
Notably, India lost 0-1 to Qatar in Doha after a good show of defensive discipline. India are already out of contention for a World Cup berth but remain in the reckoning for the 2023 Asian Cup. They are currently at the 4th spot in Group E standings of AFC qualification.
Igor Stimac’s men still have two matches in the joint qualifiers — they play Bangladesh on June 7 and Afghanistan on June 15. They need to collect 6 points from the remainder of the games to stand a chance of reaching the final round of Asian Cup qualifiers.
