Girls4Tech: Mastercard announces second phase of Girls4Tech in India | – Times of India
Mastercard has announced plans to expand its Girls4Tech STEM education program in India, to reach 100,000 additional female students by 2024. The program, supported by the Mastercard Impact Fund and in partnership with the American India Foundation, will provide STEM education to girls aged 8 to 14 in 40 different government schools in Delhi and across the country.
In the 2020-2021 academic year, Mastercard’s Girls4Tech program reached over 112,482 girls in both urban and rural areas across six states in India, including 10,000 in Delhi.
Despite the growth potential in the fields of science and technology, a significant gender gap persists in these areas. According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2019-20, while women make up 43% of STEM graduates in India, only 14% work in scientific research at universities and institutions. This gap is particularly concerning in light of the need for a skilled workforce and the increasing importance of diversity in the workforce for businesses.
Mastercard is collaborating with the American India Foundation (AIF) to address the disparity in girls’ participation in STEM fields and prepare them for future careers. The goal is to reduce the gender gap in STEM education and attract more girls to these fields.
Mastercard launched an award-winning education program called Girls4Tech in 2014 to create future problem solvers in the STEM fields by utilizing Mastercard’s expertise in technology and innovation. Through the program, girls are exposed to a range of STEM careers, and the program has been successful in reaching over 110,000 students through in-person and virtual sessions led by Mastercard employee volunteers. The program has also extended its reach by making its STEM curriculum available through online resources.
“The under-representation and disparity of women in STEM are results of deep-rooted social biases, and expectations, influencing the quality of education they receive and the subjects they study. The lack of female leaders and role models in STEM is also a barrier and one of the key drivers behind the gender gap in labour market success. American India Foundation is committed to intervening measures that focus on attracting young girls to STEM subjects, and our partnership with Mastercard on Girls4Tech is one such step,’’ said Mathew Joseph, Country Director, American India Foundation.
Subhashini Chandran, Vice President of Social Impact, Asia Pacific, Mastercard Centre for Inclusive Growth said, “Even though more women are needed in the workforce, they continue to face several challenges, particularly in India’s semi-urban and rural areas. One is the prevailing perception that the tech industry is dominated by men. As a result, girls do not receive adequate encouragement to pursue STEM disciplines at school or university. Through the Girls4Tech program, which is based on global science and math standards and curated by engineers and technologists, Mastercard aims to support the Government’s vision to create more opportunities for women in the workforce by inspiring young girls and women to pursue STEM education which will help to prepare them for jobs of the future.”Mars
