Goa schools likely to be asked to form panels to assess Class X students – Times of India

PANAJI: As the executive council of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is set to meet on Saturday to decide on the method of evaluating Class X students, the board is considering asking each high school to form a ‘results committee’. Plans are to allow two co-opted members from a neighbouring school on a particular results committee to ensure fair processes have been followed.

After the Class X public exam was cancelled, the Goa Board had announced that students of the 2021 batch will be evaluated based on their internal assessment marks. Schools carry out a unit test, a mid-yearly examination and preliminary examination for Class X students based on which the evaluation is likely to be carried out.

Some schools are in a quandary over these plans as their students had not answered one or any of the internal assessment exams or the preliminary exam during the pandemic year. In such cases, one plan being considered is to allow schools to conduct a one-time objective-type exam which will allow the school to assess such students.

Sources said that one of the plans of the board includes using the past average performances of previous years of each school at the Class X exam to help moderate the marks allotted to students. For instance, if a student is allotted 75 out of 80 in English, it will be seen if this is consistent with the past performance of students over the last couple of public exams and correction or adjustment to the marks allotted will be done accordingly.

As per sources, students who do not qualify to be promoted to Class XI after the evaluation is carried out based on internal assessment marks, will be eligible for sports marks and condonation (grace) marks as per the usual practice. But the plans are yet to be finalised by the executive council of the board on Saturday.

From the academic year 2020-21, the Goa Board had allowed students who want to pursue the science stream in higher classes to opt for mathematics level 2. The board is likely to allow only these students to answer the one-time entrance exam to be held for admissions to science stream in Class XI.
