Google’s new Nest Hub smart speaker makes sure you get a good night’s sleep

If you’re not getting enough beauty sleep then Google may have dreamed up the perfect gadget. The tech giant’s new all-screen Nest Hub may look pretty similar to its predecessor but this new device has a clever sleep-sensing trick up its sleeve.

Tucked inside its case is a unique radar technology which can check how your body is coping when the sun goes down and you’re cosy under the sheets. Powered by Google’s Soli the Nest Hub can monitor you throughout the night with it checking breathing, movement and even snoring.

There are also regular checks on how light and warn the room is which are both factors in getting a good night’s rest. Once you’ve woken from your slumber you’ll get a full report on how well you’re sleeping and recommendations on how to make things better.

Now, before you freak out about Google watching you at night it’s worth knowing that there’s no camera inside the Nest Hub and all personal data is stored on the device itself with nothing sent to the cloud.

Along with tracking sleep, this device has also been designed to help you drop off with its screen able to dim automatically and relaxing sounds playing quietly from its in-built speaker.

The screen will also show information such as news and weather reports plus you can link it to your Google Photos account and use it as a digital photo frame.

Another nice bonus is that the Nest Hub is fully compatible with a number of streaming service including Disney+, YouTube and Netflix although watching shows on the small 7-inch might not be for everyone.

One final thing to note about this new device is that Google says it has boosted the audio credentials with things 50 percent better bass than before.

Speaking about the new device Ashton Udall, Senior Product Manager, Google Nest said: “A little more than two years ago, I was part of the team that created Nest Hub, Google’s first smart display. Since then, we’ve been exploring ways to make these devices even more helpful.

We know people already come to Google for information and tools to help them live healthier, happier lives, and we’ve specifically noticed more and more questions about sleep, exercise and health. So we decided to bring these kinds of solutions to our second-generation Nest Hub, while also improving on the things people already love about it.”

Google says that Sleep Sensing on the second-gen Nest Hub is available as a free preview until next year. There’s no word on what will happen after that although users may find themselves paying a subscription fee in the future.

The new Nest Hub costs £89.99 and is available for pre-order from today in Chalk, Charcoal, Sand and Mist.
