Hardik Pandya should play only if he can bowl: Gautam Gambhir | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir is mighty pleased with India’s victories against England and Australia in the warm-up matches of the T20 World Cup.
In his column for the Times of India, Gambhir wrote, “Indian cricket team have had some decent results from the warm up games. Beating England and Australia must have been two good ticks in the box. I am certain that the group would be feeling the same. Before I get into the specific players and if they presented their A game in the warm up games, let me ponder a little over what I call “Dressing Room Chords”. Dressing Room Chords is something that defines how the vibe is within the team. During the 2007 T20 World Cup, we were coming at the back of a long tour of England. Most of us were either making a comeback or trying to create space in the Indian dressing room. This in turn helped in creating the vibe I am referring to.”
Gambhir recalled India’s stupendous title triumph in the maiden edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007.
“Cricket is a unique sport. It is a team game alright, but an individual can galvanize a group with his solo performance. We all play for a common goal which is to help the team win but if you dig deeper, a team-member is also trying to establish himself. So, while there is a main plot to the script, there are many sub-plots which align together to make for a big picture. For example, in 2007, Sehwag was making a comeback to the Indian team, myself, Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Kartik were trying to establish our spots, RP Singh, Sreesanth, Joginder Sharma, Yusuf Pathan were all in similar probation boats. And of course, it was MS Dhoni’s first stint as a captain. With all this in the background, it was obvious that we were a pack of hungry athletes trying to make a mark,” Gambhir added.
Drawing a parallel between the 2007 side and the current team, Gambhir hoped the individual goals of the current players may combine and result in India winning the title.
“I sense something similar this time too. Virat Kohli has announced he will be quitting T20 captaincy, KL Rahul is still trying to establish himself at the top of the order, Hardik Pandya is an all-rounder we all want to see but is so far elusive, Surya Kumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Varun Chakravarthy are in probation period and then there is MS Dhoni in his maiden role as a mentor. Like 2007, once again there are individual goals to be achieved, once again there are sub-plots which could combine to create a rosy bigger picture,” Gambhir opined.
Hardik Pandya’s inability to bowl during the recently concluded IPL forced the selectors to replace spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel with seamer Shardul Thakur in the squad.
“Now talking about specifics. I’d like to see Hardik bowl his full quota. Unless there are fitness issues, he should be providing the balance to the team. But if he is not bowling, then he is not an automatic starter in my team,” Gambhir concluded.
