I tried a fragrance immersion to find my new signature scent
Each fortnight, Stephanie Darling roadtests a different make-up, skincare or wellness trend to find out whether it’s worth your time.
It’s time for a new-season scent so I’m visiting the Guerlain counter for an olfactory immersion.
The lowdown I have come to consult Esther at the Guerlain counter at David Jones and to enjoy a one-on-one Haute Perfumerie fragrance experience featuring 17 refillable scents that come in beautiful customised bottles. I’d already made Esther aware of some of my favourite Guerlain fragrances. These include Vetiver (grassy, fresh and technically a men’s fragrance, but who abides by those rules any more?), Mitsouko (which I used to think smelled weird until I realised its joy), and Shalimar (zesty and seductive). To begin our fragrance discovery, Esther spritzes each perfume onto a fan and wafts it in front of my nose to give me a true taste of how it smells. I drift towards the collection’s rose-scented options.
Pain factor Just trying to narrow down my choices. It’s not easy.
Downtime Set aside a full hour; you don’t want to rush this!
Results I decide on L’Art & Matière Rose Barbe (davidjones.com $550), drawn by its notes of wild roses, honey, lychee, raspberry and earthy patchouli. Esther then asks me to choose a braid and engraving for my bottle, all part of the bespoke service.
Where to get it David Jones Elizabeth Street store (Sydney, 02 9266 5228) and Bourke Street store (Melbourne, 03 9643 2452).
