India vs Ireland: Five India players to watch out for | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: With a second-string side led by Hardik Pandya, India are set to face Ireland in a two-match T20I series in Dublin on June 26 and 28.
But with the next edition of the T20 World Cup around the corner, the performances in this series won’t go unnoticed and every player will be looking to give his very best to seal a possible berth for the marquee event.
TimesofIndia.com here looks at five India players to watch out for in the series:
Umran Malik (Bowler – Right arm fast)

7

Tearaway pacer from Jammu, Umran Malik, made headlines and impressed everyone with his furious fast bowling playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022.
Clocking over 150kmph consistently, Umran took 22 wickets in the 14 matches he played for SRH last season. And he was quickly drafted into the Indian squad for the T20I series against South Africa.
But Umran didn’t get a game as India drew the five-match series 2-2 (the decider was washed out).
Nevertheless, with some of the India pacers gearing up for the one-off Test against England and some nursing injuries, Umran will be eyeing a possible India debut in Ireland where the conditions and pitches would suit his raw pace.
Rahul Tripathi (Top order batter – Right hand bat)

8

Rahul Tripathi earned his maiden call-up to the Team India squad on the basis of solid performances with the bat in more than one IPL season. He had a good outing in 2022 as well.
Playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Tripathi scored 413 runs in 14 matches with three half-centuries last season. He was the second-highest run-scorer for SRH.
Tripathi has been one of the most consistent uncapped IPL players over six seasons with the 2022 edition for Sunrisers Hyderabad being his best.
Tripathi has been consistently performing in the IPL and also for his domestic side Maharashtra and has the distinction of hitting six sixes in an over in local tournaments twice.
Tripathi has 2,540 first class runs from 47 matches so far and has also captained Maharashtra in domestic cricket.
Deepak Hooda (All-rounder – Right hand bat, right arm off-break)

9

Big-hitting all-rounder Deepak Hooda was named in the Indian squad for the T20I series against South Africa but didn’t get a game.
Hooda played 3 T20Is for India, against Sri Lanka earlier this year, but he got to bat only once in the series in which he scored 21 runs.
The 27-year-old had a fine IPL playing for debutants Lucknow Super Giants, scoring 451 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 136.66 with four fifties to his name.
Hooda will need to come up with big scores with the bat and also perform consistently with the ball to cement his place in the Indian side going ahead
Arshdeep Singh (Bowler – Left arm medium fast)

10

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh took only 10 wickets in the 14 games he played for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2022, but it was his economy rate of 7.70 that prompted the national selectors to name him in the squad for the T20I series against South Africa.
But with India preferring to go in with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Avesh Khan, Arshdeep didn’t get to play a game against the Proteas.
Despite being in the shadows of big names, Arshdeep has made a mark for himself as a death-over specialist over the past couple of IPL seasons for the Punjab franchise.
Arshdeep’s death-overs economy rate of 7.58 is only behind that of Jasprit Bumrah (7.38) for bowlers who bowled at least eight overs in the last season. After starting the IPL 2022 season on a forgettable note with five wides, Arshdeep bounced back to outsmart most of the prolific hitters in world cricket.
With Umran Malik also in the squad, it will be interesting to see if the team management gives Arshdeep his India cap. There are a total of four pacers in the 17 man squad for India – Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik.
Venkatesh Iyer (All-rounder – Left hand bat, right arm medium)

11

Venkatesh Iyer has played 9 T20Is for India so far but has hardly come up with a remarkable performance. In those 9 matches, Iyer has a top score of an unbeaten 35 that was scored against the West Indies in Kolkata earlier this year.
Iyer was in the Indian squad for the recent T20I series against South Africa but didn’t make it to the Indian playing XI.
In the 12 matches Iyer played for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2022, he scored 182 runs at a strike rate of 107.69 with just one half-century to his credit.
But the selectors have been impressed with his skills, especially his power-hitting prowess. When Hardik Pandya was on the sidelines, Iyer was the designated all-rounder that Team India was picking.
Iyer will know that going ahead he will have to make the most of every opportunity that comes his way, especially at a time when there is incredible competition for a Team India berth, especially in the shortest format. It will be interesting to see if Iyer can really make it count if he makes the playing XI cut in the upcoming series vs the Irish.
