IPL 2021: KKR all but officially in playoffs, only math keeping MI alive – All possibilities in 7 points | Cricket News – Times of India

KKR’s big win vs RR on Thursday by 86 runs, has all but completed the final four line-up for the IPL 2021 playoffs. DC, CSK and RCB had already taken three of the available four slots earlier and now the fourth is going to be KKR’s, though the official stamp will only be put on it after the MI vs SRH match today.
As things stand, barring an absolute and complete miracle, the defending champions will not be part of the playoffs this season.
With two matches left to play (MI vs SRH and RCB vs DC), both of which will be played concurrently at 7:30 pm tonight, here are all the possibilities in 7 points:
1) DC are assured of finishing at no.1 with no ties even if they lose their last game against RCB.
2) CSK can be either second by themselves (if RCB lose to DC) or in a tie with RCB. But even in a tie, their vastly superior net run rate would see them take the second spot.
3) RCB can tie with CSK by beating DC, but that will almost certainly not be enough to make the top two.
4) KKR’s win vs RR means PBKS and RR can no longer make the playoffs. RR will finish 7th and PBKS can, at best, finish tied fifth.
5) For MI, the best scenario is tied fourth with KKR, which can happen if they win their last game against SRH. But that would not really help the defending champions, because that would also almost certainly mean KKR will go through, given its much higher NRR.
6) Here’s how tough it is for MI to catch up with KKR’s NRR – – If MI were to bat first and score 220 against SRH today and then bowl them out for 50 (which would beat the record margin of 146 for all IPL seasons), that still wouldn’t be enough. Similarly, if they were to bowl out SRH for 50 and then chase it down in 3 overs, that wouldn’t be enough either to overhaul KKR’s NRR.
7) The bottomline – DC and CSK will almost certainly face off to enter the finals directly in the knock-out stage in Qualifier 1. Almost as surely, RCB will take on KKR in the Eliminator.
