HIGHLIGHTS

  • RM have been dominant throughout the season
  • Benzema is the current top scorer in the league
  • If RM win the league as well as CL, Benzema will be prime contender for Ballon d’Or this season

Real Madrid bagged three more points on Wednesday night, beating Osasuna by a margin of 3-1. Madrid now need just four points from five matches to win their 35th league title and they would be in the hunt for Champions League as well, having beaten Chelsea in an entertaining two-leg game.

Real Madrid’s talisman, Karim Benzema – currently the topscorer and the top assist-maker of the season was off colour on the night, missing out on two penalties against Sergio Herrera. Despite that, the league leaders were able to put three goals past Osasuna aided by their pace and movement in counter attacks.

David Alaba opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the 12th minute, but lost the lead right away after Ante Budimir equalised with a tap in.

Despite Osasuna dominating major parts of the game, Madrid managed to score at the brink of half time, with Marco Asensio tapping one into the goal on a play that was started by a beautiful Camavinga ball that was chipped over the players to the far post.

From there it was all Real Madrid in the second half of the game as they got two penalties, but squandered both chances. Final goal of the game came in extra time on a counter-attack as Osasuna pushed up. Vinicius Junior dribbled into the box and passed it square to the Real Madrid right-back, who was waiting for a chance to tap one home.

With the win, Real Madrid now will have to have a monumental breakdown if they are to lose the title. Not only will Madrid need to lose most of their games, they will need Barcelona to win all their remaining fixtures as well.

If Madrid win the title, Karim Benzema will be a prime contender to win the Ballon d’Or provided, Real win the Champions League this season.
