Koneru Humpy qualifies for women’s Candidates | Chess News – Times of India

CHENNAI: World No. 3 Koneru Humpy qualified for the FIDE women’s Candidates which is scheduled to be held in the first half of next year. The confirmation came after the fourth and final leg of the women’s Grand Prix (WGP) which concluded in Gibraltar on Wednesday evening. Interestingly, Humpy had pulled out of the last leg due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The FIDE rules state that the top-2 players from WGP get to be part of the Candidates. Aleksandra Goryachkina, who topped the WGP points table, has already qualified for the Candidates as the runner-up of the World championship match in 2020.
The qualification criteria then states that the next two on the WGP finishers’ list will make the cut. So, Humpy, who had 293-1/3 points from the two legs in the WGP, booked her berth as she finished second in the finishers’ list.
This is also the fifth successive time that Humpy has ended second in the event. The other to qualify for the Candidates from WGP was Kateryna Lagno. “I am pleased to have made the Candidates. Having said that, I would’ve loved to have played in this tournament and then make the grade for the Candidates. But these are very tough circumstances and I chose to forego this leg of WGP due to the rising Covid-19 cases in the country,” Humpy told TOI on Wednesday.
Speaking on the field that’s expected at the Candidates, Humpy said, “It will be a high-profile event with the best women’s players featuring in it. The level of competition will be top-notch and every player will be keen to bring her ‘A’ game to the event.”
The 34-year-old women’s rapid champion is slated to be part of the FIDE women’s World Cup in Sochi, Russia next month. The event offers three spots for the Candidates.
The biggest question is – having already qualified for the event – will Humpy be part of the WC? “I am yet to decide on it. I hope to make the final call on my participation in the tournament by Thursday,” she said. Humpy will next be seen in action at the women’s online speed chess event which starts off on June 10.
