LG working on new technology that can start a car using gestures and facial recognition: How does it work? – Times of India

LG Electronics has developed a new system that allows car owners to start their vehicle’s ignition by just using facial expressions and finger movements that are recognised by the in-built cameras inside the car. The South Korea-based company has gone through a lot of research and development in this arena so that this new automobile technology will improve the safety of the drivers.
This technology will help car owners to start their vehicles to reduce the importance of car keys and use just the facial biometrics ignition solution. In 2019, LG filed a patent for its “biometric authentication method and device using multiple cameras in a car” and now that patent has been published.
How does it work?
Techradar reports that specific body parts of the car owner are recorded using one camera and informs about adjustments. While the other records camera captures their iris and other biometric characteristics. This allows the driver to start their cars and make the required adjustments by just using hand gestures and facial expressions.
Each driver can customise the environment inside the vehicle by using facial recognition.
For instance, whenever the vehicle identifies the driver who is using facial recognition, it automatically adjusts the seat position, cabin temperature, speed, and audio volume that is preferred by that driver.
The report also adds that this system will be able to notice if a driver is exhausted or falling sick ]while driving. Facial recognition technology on the vehicle’s dashboard camera helps in keeping the vehicle secured. It can identify the driver and other family members who are authorised to drive the vehicle. This ensures that the vehicle is not misused or stolen.
Future of Automobile technology
This biometrics technology will also allow drivers to monitor other devices to avoid distractions while driving. The camera installed inside the vehicle can capture the driver’s gestures to adjust certain driving conditions like — adjusting the audio volume or making calls via the smartphone that is connected to the car’s audio. This will help the driver to focus more on driving and never take their hands off the steering wheel.
Moreover, this detection system is able to record the movement of a person as well as objects. The advanced camera technology is also expected to locate upcoming obstacles and anticipate possible collisions. The system is able to detect the size and other specifics of an object whenever it spots one and by using the calculation results, the car will be able to automatically choose the smoothest manoeuvre and which lane to stay in and will also be able to alter the speed accordingly.
The interiors of the upcoming automobiles are being developed with keeping biometric and touchless technology in mind. The report adds that LG is also waiting for patents regarding new technology in automotive foldable displays and vehicle-to-vehicle communications.
