Lindsey Wilson Uses 34 First Half points Against Montana Western to Advance to Quarterfinals

COLUMBIA, Ky. – For the third straight season, the No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team advances to the NAIA FCS Quarterfinals. The Blue Raiders (11-0) defeated Montana Western 48-21 to continue their postseason run.

Jaylen Boyd was named the NAIA Football Championship Series First Round Offensive Player of the Game, averaging 5.1 yards per rush with 143 total yards and two touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Robert Carter was awarded the NAIA FCS First Round Defensive Player of the Game, recording five tackles, four solo, and three pass breakups.

Cameron Dukes threw for 243-yards and two touchdowns while adding 40 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Darius Willis led the defense in tackles, with six total. Luke Bowman added five tackles while the pair of Cashawn Beasley and Roman Mcdonald chipped in four tackles of their own.

Montana Western (8-4) took the lead on the first drive of the game as quarterback Jon Jund linked with Jamison Hermanson to put the Bulldogs in Lindsey Wilson territory. The Blue Raiders defense stood tall, holding the opposition to a field goal as the Bulldogs took a 3-0 advantage with 12:06 left in the first quarter.

Lindsey Wilson also scored on their first drive of the game after Dukes completed a 44-yard pass to Logan Collier deep in Bulldog territory. A trio of rush attempts by Boyd pushed the Blue Raiders closer as Dukes picked up the touchdown with his legs. Lindsey Wilson never surrendered the lead again with 10:19 remaining in the quarter.

After a three-and-out by Lindsey Wilson’s defense the Blue Raiders offense extended the lead. Boyd picked up his first touchdown of the afternoon on a 17-yard run. The extra point was good by Ian Sauter as the Blue Raiders took a 14-3 lead going into the second quarter.

A little over a minute into the second quarter, Lindsey Wilson faced a 3rd-and-14. Dukes connected with Noel Patterson for a 52-yard score and a 20-3 lead. Montana Western scored their first touchdown of the day on a seven-yard run by Jund to cut the lead 20-9 with 11:04 left in the half.

 Lindsey Wilson finished the half by scoring two touchdowns in a little over three minutes. Dukes picked up his second rushing touchdown on a nine-yard run and connected an 18-yard pass to Jaleel Warren as the Blue Raiders took a 34-9 lead going into halftime.

The Bulldogs scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, with Jund completing a five-yard pass to Nate Simkins as Montana Western trailed 34-15. The scoreless quarter by the Blue Raiders was the first scoreless quarter for LWC since their 31-0 win over Pikeville (Ky.) on Oct. 23.

Lindsey Wilson opened the fourth quarter with Boyd’s second touchdown of the afternoon to increase the advantage to 41-15. After another three-and-out by the Lindsey Wilson defense, Dukes capped off the scoring for the Blue Raiders on a three-yard run to take a 48-15 lead.

The Bulldogs picked up a late touchdown when Jund completed an eight-yard pass for Simkins second touchdown of the day. The Blue Raiders down Montana Western 48-21 to advance to the NAIA FCS Quarterfinals.

The Lindsey Wilson football will host Keiser (Fla.) in the NAIA FCS Quarterfinals on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT.
