mediatek: Mediatek Dimensity 1050 announced: Here’s what makes it different from other SoCs from the company – Times of India

MediaTek has announced its new chipset under the Dimensity lineup. The chipmaker has unveiled its latest — Dimensity 1050 chip globally. The new chip from the company supports mmWave 5G along with the sub-6GHz 5G. It is an octa-core chip built using TSMC’s 6nm processor.
How is Dimensity 1050 different from other 5G chips from MediaTek?
Dimensity 1050 is MediaTek’s first system-on-chip (SoC) to feature mmWave 5G support alongside the sub-6GHz 5G. Before this, all the MediaTek 5G SoCs featured the slightly slower Sub-6GHz 5G support only.
The company has also confirmed that the chip will offer auto-switching between mmWave and slower sub-6GHz 5G to offer seamless connectivity.
For those who don’t know, mmWave is the latest and fastest standard of 5G network which can provide speeds in gigabytes. However, it is limited in terms of coverage and reaches. Sub-6GHz, on the other hand, is slightly slower compared to mmWave, but has better coverage. To fill that gap, chipmakers usually implement both mmWave and Sub-6GHz on their chip to offer uninterrupted 5G connectivity.
Apart from that, the Dimensity 1050 also comes with Wi-Fi 6E support which will help users get better Wi-Fi connectivity on the smartphones powered by the chip.
As of now, there’s no information available on the smartphones that will be powered by the new chip. However, MediaTek has confirmed that smartphones will start arriving in the market powered by Dimensity 1050 by Q3, 2022.
