Meta: New round of layoffs start at Meta globally: Teams affected, jobs cut and more – Times of India

There’s a new round of job cuts at Facebook-parent Meta. The latest downsizing is part of the second round of layoffs announced in March. In March this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that the company will cut 10,000 more jobs as the tough business environment and economic uncertainty persists. In an SEC filing announcing the cuts, Meta said that it anticipated lowered total expenses in 2023, ranging from $86 billion to $92 billion.
The job cuts have been confirmed by Meta spokesperson to several publications.
Teams impacted by job cuts
This time technical roles across Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram are reportedly impacted. As per posts on professional networking website LinkedIn, employees with technical backgrounds like user experience, software engineering, graphics programming, gameplay and other similar roles have been affected. In all, 4,000 jobs are likely to be cut.
Employees informed via internal memo
The affected employees were informed via an internal memo from Meta’s head of human resources, Lori Goler. “This will be a difficult time as we say goodbye to friends and colleagues who have contributed so much to Meta,” she wrote. “It will take time for everyone — both those leaving and those staying — to process tomorrow’s news, and I know teams will show up for each other with compassion, support and care.” Goler further added that the process may differ for employees outside North America.
More job cuts coming in May
Reports also suggest that the next round of layoffs may be coming in May. These job cuts are likely to hit product-facing teams and business-facing roles, such as finance, legal and HR.
Restructuring on cards
Teams across Meta are also likely to be restructuring and change in hierarchy post the layoffs. The company will also tell employees if they are getting new managers, according to the memo. Instagram head Adam Mosseri wrote in a note to staffers earlier this week that the company plans to “wind down” its presence in London. Instagram will move some individual roles back to North America while other roles will not continue, Mosseri wrote. Incidentally, just last year Instagram had announced that the company plans to make London its fourth global office along with San Francisco, Menlo Park and New York City.
