MSC Softball Opening Round Day Three Recap; Tournament Bracket Set

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The 2021 Mid-South Conference Opening Round wrapped up on Saturday with Georgetown (Ky.) and Martin Methodist (Tenn.) punching their tickets to the MSC Softball Tournament final site.

No. 6 seed Georgetown advanced with a 4-3 victory in eight innings while ninth-seeded Martin Methodist defeated No. 4 seed Cumberland 8-7.

The MSC Softball Tournament begins on Thursday May 6 at Sparks Park in Columbia, Ky. Bethel (Tenn.) and Georgetown get things started on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT with the winner moving on to face top-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.) at 4 p.m. CT. Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) and Martin Methodist (Tenn.) matchup at 1:30 p.m. CT with the winner facing No. 2-seed Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Two consolation matches will take place on Friday at Hord Softball Field in Campbellsville, Ky at 11 a.m. ET and 1:30 p.m. ET. The winner’s bracket final takes place at 4 p.m. CT Friday with the consolation semifinal taking place at 6:30 p.m. CT. On Saturday, the consolation final takes place at 2:30 p.m. CT with the championship game beginning at 5 p.m. CT. The if-necessary game will take place on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT

Georgetown vs. Cumberland

The Tigers (23-18) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Kristen Klimesh tripled to deep-right center field and then came into score on a throwing error. Georgetown increased its lead to 2-0 in the second inning on a Maddie Sims leadoff home run.

Cumberland (16-23) answered in the sixth inning tying the game with a pair of runs. Ashtyn Blair drove in Megan Blackwell to make it a 2-1. Kenzie France tied the game with an RBI-single to left field. Georgetown retook the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a Klimesh RBI-single.

The Phoenix’s Taylor Woodring tied the game at 3-3 with a leadoff home run in the top of the seventh. After a groundout to begin the bottom of the eighth, Carly Oliver singled to deep left field. Klimesh then reached on an error by the Cumberland second baseman which advanced Oliver to second. Sarah Claxon gave the Tigers the 4-3 victory with a walk-off single that scored Oliver.

Megan Brankamp earned the win for the Tigers pitching all eight innings giving up two earned runs on eight hits while striking out a pair.

Cumberlands vs. Martin Methodist

The RedHawks (11-28) got on the board first in the top of the first inning on a Samantha King RBI-single. Cumberlands (41-16) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Emily Bryant reached on a bunt single that scored Emily Jasper.

Chloe Clavon gave Martin Methodist a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth with a three-run home run. The Patriots answered back in the bottom of the fifth scoring four runs from a Meryn Livingston home run and an RBI-single from Katie Cheeseman.

Hannah Ward tied the game in the top of the sixth on an infield single that scored Chaney Dutton. The RedHawks would add three more runs in the inning to retake the lead 8-5. Cumberlands cut the lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth after Hailey Wood stole home and Maddie Sickau hit a sacrifice fly.

Kamryn Murdock earned the win pitching five innings while Karla Pena earned the save for Martin Methodist pitching two innings giving no hits and one unearned run.
