Nagpur: AIIMS among 15 nodal centres for H1N1 study

Nagpur: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Nagpur lab has been designated as a nodal centre for a study on H1N1 by the Indian Council Medical Research (ICMR). It is among the 15 regional laboratories for pan-India epidemiological, virological and genomic surveillance for human influenza through DHR-ICMR Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) network, AIIMS said in a statement released to the press.

Dr Meena Mishra, professor and head, department of Microbiology, AIIMS, Nagpur, told the news agency that in this study 25 samples every week are to be tested. “The patients are screened using Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) case definition. ILI cases are screened from OPD of primary health care centres and community healthcare centres whereas SARI cases are screened from patients admitted in tertiary care centres only. Under this study, we check for influenza A/B and its sub typing. Also, we detect the antiviral drug resistance for oseltamivir,” she said.

The referral laboratory is SMS Medical College, Jaipur, for further genetic analysis. Dr Mishra said the VRDL has also procured test kits to cater to OPD cases and admitted patients as caseload has increased. “Under VRDL funds, we have procured 200 kits,” she said.
