Australian opener Usman Khawaja believes that One Day Internationals are dying a slow death in the current era of franchise cricket. Khawaja, who travels all across the to play in T20 leagues, said that he does not prefer ODIs personally because neither they hold the meaning of Test cricket nor they are as fun as the T20 format of the game.

“I think personally, one-day cricket is dying a slow death. There is still the World Cup, which I think is really fun and it’s enjoyable to watch, but other than that, even myself personally, I’m probably not that into one-day cricket,” he said.

Khawaja’s comments come in the background of Ben Stokes choosing to retire from ODIs, calling it unsustainable for his body. Stokes said that playing all three formats were not possible for him and he could not give his hundred per cent in the ODIs.

“Right now it really feels like it is not really that important because of the T20 World Cup. Something has to give, because you cannot have all three formats all together, playing all the games. You’re going to have to decide and choose,” Khawaja said.

“You’ve got Test cricket, which is the pinnacle, you’ve got T20 cricket which obviously has leagues around the world, great entertainment, everyone loves it and then there’s one-day cricket, and I feel like that’s probably the third ranked out of them all,” the batter elaborated.

Asked about why it was such a problem, Khawaja indicated that no one wants to stay away from their family for the entire year.

“Not impossible, but very tough. So much travelling. if you’re playing all three forms of the game, you are not home at all really,” the player was quoted as saying by PTI.
