Premier League: David de Gea centre of attention once again as Manchester United fall 4-0 to Brentford

Manchester United slipped to yet another low in the Premier League losing their first two matches for the first time since 1992/93.
On Saturday, 13 August, United were routed by a first-half assault from Brentford as the home side took a 4-0 lead against one of the most successful clubs in the history of the Premier League.

United’s form off late in world football has been questionable, with the club finishing 6th in the Premier League last season, however, Saturday was yet another low for the Red Devils as they were smashed around by a team, who were promoted to the top flight English football in 2021.

At the heart of United’s debacle was David de Gea, United’s trusted general for many years, whose silly mistakes took the club out of competition in the first 35 minutes of the play.

First, de Gea let a simple shot slip between his hands, and then absolutely sold Christen Eriksen under spirited pressing from the Brentford forward line.

The Danish midfielder gave the ball way during the pressing, ending up in United conceding two goals in 18 minutes.

Once the terror of the first 45 minutes were over, Ten Hag’s changes brought stability in the team. He removed Luke Shaw, Fred and Lisandro Martinez and brought in Tyrel Malacia, Scott McTominay and Rafael Varane.

While United stopped conceding, they remained scoreless throughout the second half, despite dominating the majority of the possession. De Gea also improved his technique in the second half, making two key saves.

That however was never going to change the result of the game, as United looked uninspired on the ball.

After two games, United are still goalless in the Premier League, and have conceded six goals in total, putting them in the 20th position in the league table, with the worst goal difference at the moment.
