PS5 Shortage Prompts Sony To Continue PS4 Production Through 2022

Sony comes in with a new 2022 strategy to counter the PS5 shortage and keep gamers in the PlayStation ecosystem.

It’s not new information that a PS5 console is like finding a needle in a haystack right now but thankfully, Sony has implemented plans to keep players ‘in the game’.

To help navigate the ongoing shortages of PlayStation 5 consoles, the Sony Group are apparently proceeding with the production of more PlayStation 4s throughout the remainder of the year.

In an article by Bloomberg, Sony “told assembly partners late last year that it would continue making its earlier-generation machine through this year, according to people familiar with the matter.”

These plans would now aggregate an estimated million PS4 units throughout 2022 which in turn would alleviate the stress on the company’s PS5 production. The PS4 also uses less advanced chips which makes it a lot less money to produce countering the more expensive PS5.

According to the unnamed Sony official, these plans will “fill the supply vacuum and keep gamers within the PlayStation ecosystem.”

Sony also told Bloomberg that the PS4 production would indeed persevere this year and that they didn’t have any initiatives to discontinue the console “It is one of the best-selling consoles ever and there is always crossover between generations”.

In the report, it also states that Sony “is exploring new arenas to sustain growth” and “It’s preparing to release more powerful virtual reality headsets to take advantage of future games and applications in the so-called metaverse and is considering launching its own electric vehicles.”

As much as the demand for a PS5 is high, the PS4, which was released in 2013, still has the staying power and remains a popular option for players with “a substantial portion of Sony’s gaming division income from subscriptions and software sales.”
