PS5-style stock shortages could soon hit Android smartphones

One Samsung supplier allegedly said the Qualcomm chip shortfall was impacting mid and lower ranged Samsung phones, while another claimed there was also a shortage of Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip – the Snapdragon 888.

While elsewhere a senior executive at a top contract manufacturer for several major smartphone brands said there was a shortage of Qualcomm parts which would lead to handset shipments being cut this year.

A Samsung Electronics spokesperson declined to comment. While a Qualcomm representative pointed towards recent comments made by executives from the firm who said they believed the chip makers could hit its second-quarter fiscal targets.

The news comes after last month Xiaomi VP Lu Weibing spoke about the worldwide chip shortage tech firms are having to grapple with.

Writing on Weibo, Lu said: “It’s not a shortage, it’s an extreme shortage”.
