BENGALURU: Perennial IPL underachievers Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals are yet to bring their all-round game to the table this season.

The unavailability of Rishabh Pant has come as a huge blow for Delhi, while injury to Rajat Patidar and Josh Hazlewood has hindered RCB’s strategies. But that in no way justifies their inconsistent ways. Delhi have lost all four matches while RCB have suffered back-to-back losses after a convincing win against Mumbai Indians in the opener.
Although it is still the initial stages of the tournament, the two teams are already playing catch-up. It is imperative for winless DC to turn their fortunes around when they take on RCB at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Saturday.
Faf du Plessis and David Warner’s men need to find a way to close out games after their last-ball loss to Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians respectively.
RCB, as in the past, are dependent on batting stars du Plessis, Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell. The first two have been on the money with 175 and 164 runs respectively. The home team will also be at ease on the playing surface, which has largely aided the batters, with the last match producing 425 runs.
While the start has been anything but promising, Delhi’s strength lies in the depth and variety in bowling. Anrich Nortje, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav should be on top of their game. If they can contain RCB’s top order, Warner and Co. can gain the upper hand given RCB’s untested middle order.
At a venue with shorter boundaries, the batters will have a big say and Warner will have to lead from the front. Warner is the team’s top-scorer with 209 runs, but he has just been a shadow of himself with a strike rate of 114.83.
Adding insult to injury is Prithvi Shaw (34 runs) and Mitchell Marsh’s (4) lack of form. Axar has been promising, contributing 108 runs at a strike rate of 168.75. All eyes will be on home talent Manish Pandey, who is playing for a new franchise in his backyard.
On the other hand, RCB’s death bowling has to improve considerably, with Harshal Patel going at 11.72 runs this season.
