Red Bull boss Christian Horner has admitted that he is a bit concerned about Mercedes’ recent resurgence, saying that the Silver Arrows are getting closer and closer.
Max Verstappen had a terrific weekend at the French GP as he capitalized on Charles Leclerc’s crash to extend his lead at the top to 63 points. However, Verstappen wasn’t the only one celebrating as Mercedes secured a double podium finish with Lewis Hamilton in second and George Russell in third.
The Silver Arrows entered the race weekend as favorites for a win. However, things didn’t go according to plan for Mercedes as Red Bull and Ferrari dominated proceedings.
However, during the race, Hamilton and Russell showed a lot of spirit and the 24-year-old’s smart opportunistic move on Sergio Perez was hailed as one of the best overtakes of the weekend as he caught the Mexican napping and grabbed third place from the Red Bull team.
The seven-time World Champion, in particular, has had a fantastic turnaround as he finished on the podium for four consecutive races. While Red Bull are 126 points clear of Mercedes at the moment in the Constructors’ Championship, Horner did admit concerns about their recent turnaround.
Speaking after the race, as quoted by the Daily Mail, the Red Bull boss said that Verstappen had a comfortable win in the end, despite all the talk about Mercedes being strong at the Circuit Paul Ricard.
However, he said that the Silver Arrows team are slowly chipping away and are getting closer to the top.
“They were certainly talking up their chances coming into the weekend. I think in the end, Max [Verstappen] was reasonably comfortable.”
“But you can see they’re chipping away at it, they’re getting closer.”
“I hear Toto [Wolff] said they’re going to work throughout the summer break to improve the car, which would, of course, be illegal. You can see they’re getting closer and closer,” said Horner.
