Some HBCUs Lower Fall Tuition | Inside Higher Ed

Clinton College, a historically Black institution in South Carolina, is halving its tuition for all students who enroll for this fall. Each full-time student will also receive a new computer tablet.

Jocelyn Biggs, associate vice president of student enrollment, said the move is in response to the pandemic. She hopes lower costs will act as a recruitment tool and make the college more affordable for families negatively affected by the economic downturn, told WBTV.

“This is our way of saying you can still go to college at a reduced tuition amount and we’re here to help,” Biggs said.

Tuition for full-time students living on-campus is normally $10,165 per semester and $5,240 per semester for students living off-campus, the Associated Press reported. The college is drawing on federal COVID-19 relief funds to make the 50 percent tuition discount possible, a spokesperson for the college said in an email.

Clinton isn’t the only HBCU hoping to attract students with lowered tuitions and incentives. Denmark Technical College, another historically Black institution in South Carolina, will cover remaining tuition costs for the first 500 students who enroll for this fall after they receive federal financial aid, according to the college’s website. Wiley College, an HBCU in Marshall, Tex., is also offering a $750 tuition credit to students who enroll by June 28, the Marshall News Messenger reported.
