South Carolina Board Appoints Former President as Interim | Inside Higher Ed

The University of South Carolina Board of Trustees appointed Harris Pastides, a former president of the public research university, to serve as interim president until the board completes its search for a new president, The Post and Courier reported.

Former president Bob Caslen resigned two weeks ago after admitting he plagiarized part of the commencement speech he gave this year. He will serve as a working adviser to the university through June. Caslen will continue to be paid at the rate he’d been earning, the equivalent of about $100,000 over the next couple of months.

Pastides was president of the University of South Carolina from 2008 to 2019. His salary as interim president will be $750,000.

The university is beginning its presidential search, and Pastides expects to stay on as interim president for about a year. The search committee will be made up of eight trustees, five Faculty Senate leaders from the university campuses and the student body president from the Columbia campus.
