Sustainability continues to be big driver of demand growth: R Mukundan, Tata Chemicals

“We are expanding already and I think that we have already spoken about. And the first stream of expansion of 200,000 tonnes should come during the next budget year,” says R Mukundan, MD & CEO, Tata Chemicals

What are the key opportunities that you are looking at?
The key opportunity is about, as some of the speakers have said, how do you accelerate customer engagement? How do you sort of accelerate revenue growth? How do you get efficiencies up? How do you improve collaboration? How do you build skills? How do you build talent? These are all the opportunities. I will also ask two-three business specific questions as well. Your Q3 net profit was up 32% increase in revenues, but what is the guidance looking like amongst rising energy costs?
I do not want to speak on the business.

But what are the new product launches, etc?
So, we are focussed on our silica and our prebiotics, FOS business, the fermentation platform.
Any word on expansion capacities in 2020?
We are expanding already and I think that we have already spoken about. And the first stream of expansion of 200,000 tonnes should come during the next budget year.

Demand from new areas like solar, gas lines and, of course, lithium-ion batteries?
I think that has been a big driver. The sustainability continues to be a big driver of demand growth, especially solar, glass as well as lithium batteries. So, we are very focussed on it.

If you could just give some guidance on what the year is looking like.
It is looking pretty positive, even though there is a talk of the R word, recession. I think the demand is holding up. We are working closely with our customers, that is all we can do, stay close to customers.
