The Last of Us Part 1 developer Naughty Dog has detailed several other features that the game will have on PC. For those of you with a high-end gaming setup, you’ll be able to play the game with an unlocked frame rate, but if your PC isn’t up to the task, there’ll be support for AMD FSR 2 and Nvidia DLSS. This will help you get as much mileage as possible from your graphics card, as these two upscaling technologies can produce sharp image quality and boost frame rates in supported games.
If you’re looking for a challenge, you’ll be able to increase the tension with permadeath and speedrun modes. Permadeath does what it says on the box, as one wrong move can lead to you starting the game all over again, losing all the progress that you’d made up to that point. In the PlayStation version of the remake, Permadeath mode could be customized so that the whole game will reset on death, to the beginning of an act–around two to three hours of game time on average–and the more forgiving option of resetting the beginning of the chapter on death.
For speedrunners, the new mode will test just how quickly you can complete the game. So far the fastest time posted is under three hours, which was achieved eight months ago by AnthonyCaliber.
The Last of Us Part 1 releases on March 28 via Steam and Epic Games Store, and the recommended PC requirements are mostly in line with previous PlayStation ports such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Returnal. A solid 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second won’t be too demanding, but if you’re looking for an “ultra” experience, you’ll need a high-end GPU and plenty of RAM to handle the game at its best.
While you wait for the remake of the PS3 classic to release–which is a nominee for the 2023 World Video Game Hall of Fame–you can catch up on the HBO Max TV series that finished airing. The Last of Us Season 2 has already been announced, with writer Neil Druckmann and showrunner Craig Mazin saying that the upcoming second season won’t cover the entire storyline of Part II.
