Samsung had good and bad news in the first quarter of 2022 in the premium smartphone segment. While the company’s share declined in the segment, its Galaxy S22 Ultra emerged as the ‘best-selling Android smartphone in the premium segment market, as per Counterpoint Research’s Market Pulse Service. Samsung launched Galaxy S22 Ultra in February this year at its first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year. The smartphone is the top-end device in the Galaxy S22 series. The smartphone is priced at Rs 109,999 onwards in India. Samsung launched Galaxy S22 Ultra which went on sale in March 2022 in the country.
Why the ‘fall’ in market share
As per the report Samsung has lost share in the premium segment “mainly because of a delayed launch of the Galaxy S22 series as compared to the S21 series launch in 2021.” The report further adds that the Galaxy S22 series is performing well overall.
May set a ‘new’ record
The Galaxy S22 Ultra combines the best of the S series and the Note series. Samsung discontinued the Note series in 2021 and brought S-Pen, the most coveted feature of Galaxy Note Series, to the Galaxy S lineup. The strategy seems to be working as according to popular tipster IceUniverse, Samsung is likely to sell 10.9 million units of Galaxy S22 Ultra this year. If the Galaxy S22 Ultra manages to reach these projected sales, it would beat the last four generations of Galaxy Note smartphones in terms of sales in its first year.
For context, Samsung reportedly sold 10.3 units of Galaxy Note 8 in its first year. While the Galaxy Note 9 registered annual sales of 9.6 million units. The Galaxy Note 9 series clocked in 9.5 million units, while the 7.5 million units of the Galaxy Note 20 series were sold in the first year.
